In 1979, Holt International Children's Services (HOLT), an esteemed organization headquartered in Eugene, USA, embarked on an initiative to establish a Child Welfare organization in India. During this formative period, the Deputy Director of HOLT, Mr. John Williams, had a fortuitous meeting with one of our esteemed founder trustees, Mrs. Usha Modak. Mrs. Modak, a dedicated social worker, was instrumental in the founding of Bharatiya Samaj Seva Kendra (BSSK). She, alongside Dr. Banoo J. Coyaji and Mr. A.D. Gadkari, came together with a shared vision to create BSSK.

BSSK was conceived as a non-profit, non-political Charitable Trust with a mission to serve children and families in need, irrespective of caste, creed, or religion. The organization was established to address the critical needs of vulnerable populations and provide them with essential support and services. BSSK's commitment to inclusivity and impartiality has been a cornerstone of its operations, as it extends its care across its centers located in Pune, Aurangabad, Sangli, and Chiplun.

formal inauguration of BSSK took place on October 1, 1979. This momentous occasion marked the official beginning of BSSK's operations from a rented stone bungalow, which served as the initial base for its activities. The inaugural day was significant, symbolizing the start of BSSK's journey in its mission to support and uplift underprivileged children and families.

Just a few weeks after the inauguration, on October 29, 1979, BSSK welcomed its first child into care. A female baby, who became the first beneficiary of BSSK's services, marked a pivotal moment in the organization's history. This event signified not only the commencement of BSSK's direct impact on individual lives but also the beginning of a broader journey toward making a meaningful difference in the lives of many.
